Chicks helping Chicks become Canyoning Leaders!

Canyoneering Chicks Coalition develops safe, skilled, and competent canyoneers through a comprehensive program of events, mentorship, and training. For women seeking to advance their technical and leadership abilities, our Leader/Mentor Program provides a structured, women-led pathway for growth. This program supports both our core offerings and the personal development of its members, fostering technical proficiency, leadership confidence, and a strong culture of mentorship through well-organized events that strengthen community and shared stewardship in the sport.

The Leader/Mentor Program members play a key role in supporting monthly virtual Knotty Nights, which offer an accessible space to build teaching skills, learn techniques, and connect with others. Program members also help lead ChickFests, our in-person gatherings centered on learning, contribution, and celebration, where women gain hands-on experience planning, guiding, and managing canyoneering events. Through these efforts, the program builds confident leaders, deepens community bonds, and continues to expand the Canyoneering Chicks network.

Women who join the CCC Leader/Mentor Program will develop a strong foundation of technical, leadership, and teaching skills. Participants will gain hands-on experience with technical skills including rope work, anchor building, rigging systems, in-canyon rappelling safety, anchor management, and rescue and haul systems using mechanical advantage. Beyond technical proficiency, the program emphasizes leadership skills such as risk management, sound decision-making, effective group leadership, and environmental stewardship rooted in Leave No Trace principles. Through a peer mentorship model, experienced canyoneers are paired with developing leaders, providing supervised teaching opportunities across in-canyon events and fostering a collaborative community where instructors can share experiences, refine best practices, and grow together.

I joined the Chicks after being part of an issue at a rendezvous event that I had attended. I've never been so inspired and learned so much from such a great group of women and I continue to want to grow even more. I see so many unsafe things in the canyons that I wish I could empower every woman canyoneer to join us and learn to break that trend!

I discovered the Canyoning Chicks after a close call experience in a canyon. The Chicks helped me grow into a knowledgable cannoneer. They also motivated me to further my education so that I could help pass along the knowledge and grow the community of awesome, independent female canyoneers.

What our Leader/Mentor Program is about

Leader/Mentor Program Mission

This program empowers a network of skilled leaders to expand our reach, ensure consistent quality, and grow the canyoning community safely and responsibly.

Leader/Mentor Program Values

  •  Access & Inclusion: We remove barriers to participation by decreasing financial limitations, turning intimidation into confidence, and replacing gatekeeping with mentorship and community. We work to remove intimidation, gatekeeping, and unnecessary barriers - welcoming women from all backgrounds and experience levels into the sport.
  • Welcoming All Bodies: We adapt the sport to support women with disabilities and welcome all body types, because inclusion means fitting the experience to women—not fitting women to the sport.
  • Community: Fostering camaraderie and mentorship through shared adventure, both in and out of the canyon.
  • Safety & Support: Providing a secure, women-led environment for physical and emotional growth.
  • Respect/Generosity: Leading with humility and sharing expertise, gear, and "beta" in a spirit of abundance.
  • Empowerment: Driving personal growth and leadership through hands-on canyon experience and structured mentorship.

Skill Progression

We view canyon leadership as a progressive spectrum of skills that culminates in becoming a Level 4 Lead Canyoneer, with the potential to advance to professional guiding.  This structured approach guides you towards assessment and certification at each stage, preparing you for increasingly advanced roles in canyoning leadership and certification:

  • Level 0 Beginning Canyoneer: Capable of self-rescue, safe rappelling, and novice skills
  • Level 1 Canyoneer: Assists in leading canyons and serves as First Person At Risk (FPAR)
  • Level 2 Advanced Canyoneer : Leads canyons, serves as Last Person At Risk  (LPAR) and anchor manager, and is capable of entry-level rescue
  • Level 3 Rescue Canyoneer: Leads canyons and is capable of technical rescue
  • Level 4 Lead Canyoneer: Capable of advanced rescue skills and leading intermediate and advanced canyons
